The famous wildlife park is one of the top attractions of Namibia. Its size is 60km by 110km, and its name means something like ‘big white place’. It consists partly of an enormous saltpan (a quarter of the area), surrounded by dry bushveld, shrubbery with several centimetres long thorns. There are plenty of mopane-trees (colophospermum mopane) and red bushwillows (combretum apiculatum). The images shown on TV give a good picture.
All animals that live here depend on water. In the dry season, from Juny until October, they yearn for rain, just like the shrubbery and plants. This is the perfect time for you to visit Etosha, as you will be guaranteed a chance of spotting lions, elephants, giraffes, white rhinos and small ungulates. The black rhino and the leopard are harder to spot. In this period, the waterholes are always teeming with animals.
You can easily have a look around Etosha with your own rental car, an experience like no other. There are various possibilities for overnight stays, even at Etosha, and recently the park extended to the west with the Dolomite Camp, which is highly recommended.
